At ARI Motors, we appreciate every story that shows how our [ARI 902](<https://www.ari-motors.com/elektroautos/ari-902>) makes life easier. One particular example is our oldest ARI owner to date, Edward John Piechocci from 74653 Künzelsau-Schloß Stetten. Born in 1927, he regularly uses his ARI [902](<https://www.ari-motors.com/elektroautos/ari-902>) to make short trips into town from his assisted living facility.

 

The [ARI 902](<https://www.ari-motors.com/elektroautos/ari-902>) offers him the ideal mobility solution: the compact ["Pure" variant](<https://www.ari-motors.com/elektroautos/ari-902-pure>) with the smallest battery version and a range of 110 kilometers meets all his needs. The Comfort package also ensures a pleasant ride. Mr. Piechocci particularly appreciates the simple charging option via the household socket. This means his ARI 902 is always ready for use and offers him a high degree of independence.

 

With a combined consumption of just 9.4 kWh per 100 kilometers and costs of just 2.80 euros per 100 kilometers (assuming an electricity price of 30 cents per kWh), the [ARI 90](<https://www.ari-motors.com/elektroautos/ari-902>) 2 is extremely inexpensive to maintain. It is also tax-exempt until at least 2030, which makes the vehicle particularly financially attractive.

 

But Edward John Piechocci is not only active on the road: in his free time, he is a passionate opera singer who inspires his fellow residents at the annual summer concert at the Schloss Stetten retirement home. His commitment and zest for life are also evident there.

With the BAFA's increased "environmental bonus", registrations in the field of electromobility have also increased. As reported by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 75,224 of the 265,227 newly registered vehicles in September 2020 were pure electric vehicles, hybrids or plug-in hybrids. That is a share of 28.63%, i.e. more than a quarter. In September 2019, the share was just 10.15%.

 

Nevertheless, the figures are less positive if you take a closer look. Although purely electrically powered vehicles have an overall share of 8.0% (21,188 new registrations), which represents an increase of 260.3% compared to the same month last year, the big winners are plug-in hybrids. With 20,127 new registrations, they achieved an impressive 463.5% increase compared to September 2019.

 

### **2\.5-ton hybrid diesels are subsidized, purely electric light vehicles are not**

 

It is questionable whether these vehicles are actually driven electrically by many owners. Particularly outside the city, it is likely that the combustion engine will often be used. What is really worrying, however, is that the majority of these vehicles are also heavy SUVs, whose electric motor is mainly used to "accelerate at traffic lights", according to Green politician Cem Özdemir.

 

With the "environmental bonus", the German government is also helping heavy and huge SUVs with an unladen weight of more than 2.5 tons. Since July, such vehicles with a plug-in function have been eligible for a subsidy of 6,750 euros. According to the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", this is leading to ever longer delivery times for models of this size. When you consider that purely electric light vehicles are not eligible for BAFA subsidies at all, you wonder what this bonus has to do with environmental protection.

 

As is so often the case, it is the Green Party that is openly addressing the problem. Cem Özdemir, for example, speaks of a "state-subsidized climate scam". But the FDP is also getting involved in the debate and, according to transport politician Oliver Luksic, is calling for monitoring of [how often the battery of plug-in hybrids is actually used](<https://www.ari-motors.com/blog/2020/11/02/studie-beweist-plugin-hybride-verbrauchen-deutlich-mehr-als-angegeben/>).

 

### **Role model Austria: plug-ins receive lower subsidies**

 

In neighboring Austria, things look a little different. The Ministry of the Environment and Transport has announced that around 11,800 applications have been recorded since the start of e-subsidies. Of these, a full 7,800 applications (i.e. 66.1%) related to purely electrically powered vehicles and just around 1,100 (9.3%) to plug-in hybrids. One reason for this could be that plug-in hybrids are only subsidized with 2,500 euros in Austria, which is more than 4,000 euros less than in Germany. In contrast, purely electrically powered vehicles in Austria receive a subsidy of 5,000 euros.

 

The subsidy for plug-in hybrids has been under fire for years, yet the federal government is sticking to it. The reason seems to be quite simple: German manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi have a number of large SUVs on offer as plug-in hybrids. On the other hand, purely electrically powered light vehicles that take up less space and do not emit a single gram of CO2 are nowhere to be found in the German car industry's catalog. "Industry bonus" would therefore be a more appropriate term for the BAFA subsidy.

 

### **Double standards prevail at federal level**

 

It remains to be hoped that there will finally be nationwide funding for all 100% electric vehicles, whether large or small. This is the case in many other countries and it is simply not justifiable why heavy plug-in hybrids receive funding in this country, while light electric vehicles do not. Instead, Germany is a patchwork quilt when it comes to subsidies, with more progressive federal states such as [Berlin](<https://www.ari-motors.com/blog/2020/10/06/berlin-welche-foerderung-erhalte-ich-fuer-mein-ari-motors-elektrofahrzeug/>), [Thuringia](<https://www.ari-motors.com/blog/2020/05/14/thueringen-welche-foerderung-erhalte-ich-fuer-mein-ari-motors-elektrofahrzeug/>), [Baden-Württemberg](<https://www.ari-motors.com/blog/2020/05/08/baden-wuerttemberg-welche-foerderung-erhalte-ich-fuer-mein-ari-motors-elektrofahrzeug/>) and [North Rhine-Westphalia](<https://www.ari-motors.com/blog/2020/05/08/nordrhein-westfalen-welche-foerderung-erhalte-ich-fuer-mein-ari-motors-elektrofahrzeug/>) promoting the light classes, while double standards prevail at federal level.
